Video Conversion Question:
I wanted to know if you know of any programs that
will convert “flash” utube videos so that I can copy them on a DVD
for my son who is in Iraq. He is a marine and his friends really want to see
the Saturday Night Live youtube spoofs on the candidates and I can’t figure
out how to copy them so I can burn them onto a DVD that he could watch on his
laptop – and figured you would know if there was anything like that out
there.

I’m glad to hear you’re helping you son out and getting some SNL skits into
his information diet. A few suggestions on what you can do.
If the military internet is blocking youtube.com
then you can use what are called proxy’s to help bypass the direct
blocking to the website. Do a google on “best proxy server list”. This
will allow you to view websites via other unblocked website.
To answer your question directly, the best converter program for
taking any video (or audio) file into another format is Media Coder

Its constantly being developed, and its free.

Question:
What is the best way to ensure that
nobody can recover any information from a hard drive that’s being
thrown away? The drive is very old; though it’s still operational, it
isn’t worth putting into a new computer or external enclosure. It holds
the OS and all files. I want to pull all documents and such, then
effectively wipe the drive clean and/or destroy it before throwing it
away.
