Sarah’s Windows Tweak: Lock Down IE History
Prevent anyone from clearing Internet Explorer’s History.By Sarah Lane
Trust is very important, but nobody has much of it when it comes to computers. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked through IE’s history after someone (friends, co-workers, strangers at the public library) used my computer. We nosy folks just wanna know, right?
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out how to clear IE’s History so the next person on your computer can’t see where you surfed (or to at least make it harder for them to find out). So on tonight’s ‘Savers I’ll show you how to disable the option to erase the history and prevent Mr. Sneak from covering his trail to Whitehouse.com.
Once again I’ll dip into the Registry with this tip. And since changes to the Registry are permanent, back it up before you make any changes in case you need to restore the Registry later.
Open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the following string:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
If you get to the Microsoft key folder and don’t see keys for Internet Explorer\Control Panel, you’ll need to add Internet Explorer as a subkey of Microsoft and Control Panel as a subkey of Internet Explorer.
Go into the Control Panel key folder and create a new DWORD value (REG_DWORD). Name it History. Right-click the History value and choose Modify. Change the data from 0 to 1.
Immediately, your “Clear History” options will become grayed out in your IE Tool menu. When you open the History menu, you’ll no longer see an option to delete selected URLs by right-clicking them. If the tweak isn’t working for you, close and relaunch any instance of IE you have running.
I know this tweak will annoy some of you, but it’ll relieve others. Although I do think enabling it could rob folks of their surfing privacy, I also know it can really come in handy. Concerned parents come to mind. And at the very least, maybe some of you will check to make sure you can wipe your History before you use a shared system to go online.
